I promised you a big announcement at the beginning of last week. After making sure I had all the details straight, I am finally ready to tell you that the publisher of Release will be… Me!

There is a reason that the word we use for passionate dedication—commitment—is the same word we use when someone is confined for psychiatric treatment. To both the outside observer and the first-hand participant, the two have marked similarities.

After exploring a few other options, independent publishing is the path that makes the most sense. Would I have loved to get Big 5* attention right out of the gate? Probably. Maybe. Actually, I’m not absolutely sure anymore.

* Definition of Big 5: HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Holtzbrinck/Macmillan, and Hachette. Combined, the Big 5 publishes 85% of all books in the marketplace and represents well more than 400 imprints (the ‘label’ under which a book is published).  Unlike the Big 10, which actually has fourteen collegiate athletic teams, and the Big 12, which now has ten teams, the people who toss around the term “Big 5” had the good sense to change their shorthand when Penguin-Random House merger occurred last year.

It’s not haughtiness that makes me say the traditional path isn’t right for me, at least for right now. It’s practicality. One lovely (customized!!) rejection letter from an agent I queried this spring said that she finds “this sort of introspective women’s fiction to be an incredibly tough sell for debut authors in the current environment.”

I hear you, sister. Without vampires, zombies, prisoners, dystopian unrest, steampunk bonafides, hipster bait, medieval settings, political intrigue, gore, or pornography, it’s tough to know where my novel fits in.

All I have is a heartfelt, highly relatable book about a life and a relationship in crisis—the story of a downfall and the reclamation of identity through conscientious gratitude, making peace with the past, and living in the present. It’s a story I committed to telling, as crazy as that may be.

Here are the early details:

  • I plan to make my eBook available for download (in limited versions) on October 15th, when I will also launch a pre-publication sale. Both of these will be hosted on my forthcoming website.
  • Custom-inscribed and autographed print copies of the book will be shipped mid-November, at which time the commercial edition will be made available through the major online retailers, both in all major eBook formats and Print on Demand.
  • Depending on the deals I can work out between now and then, the book will be available “wherever fine books are sold” soon afterward, right in time for holiday gift-giving.
  • As book signing events are scheduled, they will be announced here.

If these dates shift, I’ll let you know as soon as I do, but the train has left the station, so to speak. The wheels are in motion.
